Tactical Asset Allocation
Tactical asset allocation (TAA) is a portfolio approach that makes short-to-medium-term deviations from a long-term target mix of asset classes in order to exploit perceived opportunities or to manage risk. It treats the long-term mix as a baseline and then leans toward or away from particular asset classes as conditions appear to warrant.
The method sits alongside a stable, strategic baseline rather than replacing it. An investor first defines a long-term target through strategic asset allocation, then uses tactical adjustments to tilt that mix temporarily. Those tilts are usually bounded, so a portfolio drifts within a defined range rather than abandoning its baseline entirely. The intent is to add value or reduce exposure during specific conditions while keeping the portfolio anchored to its long-run plan.

Tactical asset allocation is the practice of intentionally shifting a portfolio's asset-class weights away from their long-term targets for a limited period. The shifts are driven by a view about near-term return or risk, and they are reversed (or rebalanced back toward the baseline) once that view changes or the holding window ends. Because the deviations are bounded and temporary, TAA is distinct from simply changing the long-term plan itself.
The signals that motivate a tilt are typically systematic and rules-based. Common examples include momentum (the tendency of recent relative performance to persist), trend-following (acting on the direction of a price trend), and mean reversion (the tendency of prices to move back toward a longer-run average). A given framework may combine several of these signals, weighting each according to its perceived reliability across asset classes.

How It Works
A tactical process begins with a signal that summarizes a near-term view about an asset class. That signal is mapped to a recommended tilt, which is the size of the deviation from the baseline weight. The tilt is then applied within preset bounds, and the portfolio is periodically reviewed so the position can be adjusted or unwound as the signal evolves. Each of these steps is usually defined in advance to keep the process repeatable.
Because signals such as momentum and mean reversion can point in different directions, a framework needs rules for combining them and for resolving conflicts. Rebalancing back toward the baseline plays a central role here: it both implements new tilts and trims positions that have grown beyond their intended size. The cadence of that rebalancing affects turnover, trading costs, and how quickly the portfolio responds to changing conditions.
Tactical vs. Strategic Allocation
Tactical and strategic allocation are complements rather than substitutes. The strategic mix sets the long-run risk and return profile, while the tactical layer adjusts that profile in response to shorter-term conditions. The table below summarizes the practical differences.

The two approaches are often layered together. A portfolio holds a strategic asset allocation as its core, and a tactical overlay shifts weights modestly around that core. This layering lets an investor pursue near-term views while still keeping the long-run plan intact, which can make the overall process easier to evaluate and revise over time.
Known Limitations
Limitations to Keep in Mind
- Signals can fail out of sample. A signal that looked reliable in historical data may weaken once it is used in live markets. Conditions change, and relationships that held in the past can fade, so a tactical tilt may add risk without adding value.
- Timing is difficult. Acting on a near-term view requires being correct about both direction and timing. Being early or late can turn a sound idea into a loss, and persistent mistiming can erode the baseline portfolio rather than improve it.
- Turnover raises costs. Frequent tilts and reversals generate trading activity. The associated transaction costs and potential tax consequences reduce any benefit and can outweigh it when signals are weak.
